Disney's Magnolia Golf Course, along with Disney's Palm Golf Course, opened on October 1st, 1971, the very same day that Disney's Magic Kingdom Park first opened to Guests. Disney's Lake Buena Vista Golf Course later opened in 1972, with all three originally designed with differing features by the late, renowned golf course architect, Joe Lee. The organization maintains pride in hosting the PGA Tour's Disney Golf Classic from 1971 - 2012.
Over 50 years, each 18-hole course underwent major renovations and redesigns to enhance conditions and playability. Recent updates occurred in 2013 (Palm), 2015 (Magnolia), and 2018 (Lake Buena Vista), resulting in improved aesthetics and playing conditions with positive guest feedback.
Earlier this year, Disney's Magnolia completed extensive re-imagination featuring reconstructed greens with reshaping and contouring, rebuilt teeing grounds, and renovated chipping and bunker areas. Off-fairway areas transformed into natural sandy waste areas with native grasses and wildflowers. A new wooden bridge connects updated holes 16 and 17 through forested landscape.
All 18 holes feature new signage with whimsical names and inspirational quotes from Walt Disney or Arnold Palmer. The primary focus introduced "Grumpy's Gauntlet" (holes 14-17), presenting shot selection and strategy challenges to all golfers.
**Hole #1: Seize Your Moment** -- Par 4 / 285 yards up to 428 yards. This demanding opening hole features trees leftward and water rightward. A right-fairway tee shot enables an advantageous middle-green approach. The undulating green slopes predominantly left-to-right, requiring wisdom for two-putt pars. Arnold Palmer's wisdom: "Putting is like wisdom -- partly a natural gift and partly the accumulation of experience."
**Hole #6: The Mouse Trap** -- Par 3 / 107 yards up to 231 yards. This deceptively elevated hole demands club selection caution. The Mickey-inspired front bunker ensures remembrance of Walt Disney's reminder: "I hope we never lose sight of one thing -- that it was all started by a mouse."
**Hole #10: Reach for the Sky** -- Par 5 / 430 yards up to 526 yards. This wide-fairway hole encourages aggressive play down the right side. Layup options left keep approach angles simple. The elevated back-to-front sloping green offers birdie or eagle opportunities. Disney's philosophy: "If you can dream it, you can do it!"
**Hole #18: Westview** -- Par 4 / 355 yards up to 492 yards. This closing hole faces the setting sun and demands strong, accurate tee shots. The green slopes rightward toward water, requiring belief in long-iron execution. Walt Disney's guidance: "When you believe in a thing, believe in it all the way, implicitly and unquestionably."
Arnold Palmer's comprehensive philosophy frames the 9th hole experience: "Golf is deceptively simple and endlessly complicated...it satisfies the soul and frustrates the intellect. It is at the same time rewarding and maddening -- and it is without a doubt the greatest game mankind has ever invented."
